Yuko Murata 「lonely spring」

GALLERY SIDE 2 is pleased to present ‘lonely spring’, 12th solo exhibition by Yuko Murata. The exhibition consists of oil on canvas paintings and oil on paper drawings made during 2022-2023.
In 2021, during the Covid on and off lockdown, Yuko Murata presented 3 exhibitions, ’birch garden’ (THE GINZA SPACE, Tokyo), ‘promenade’ (Isetan Salone Art Wall Tokyo) and ‘small sky’ (Gallery Side 2, Tokyo) . The works were as if to look into a larger world from a small canvas surface. She has also challenged to have her painting in 3D space, birch tree paintings standing from the floor.
This year exhibition ‘lonely spring’ of 14 oil on canvas paintings made during 2022-2023 and 6 oil on paper drawings. Murata applies new colors she has not used before and works on abstraction of forms. Comprised of the bold composition and strong brush strokes, Murata’s small paintings still sit serene. It is probably due to her respect in old masters such as Mokkei (13th century Chinese ink painter) and Rosetsu Nagasawa (18th century Japanese artist) . Their challenge to make a simple composition with unique brush strokes has been an influential factor in Murata’s work.
In Yuko Murata works the images are taken from old postcards, dictionaries, and tourists’ brochures. She picks up images that we might have seen before but quickly forgotten. Murata is in awe of the animals that are considered cute for many. With that point of view, she keeps a keen distance to her objects. As a result, the work is composed of rich brush marks with subdued colors and redacted forms.
